Ask the Headhunter:
Debunking the Myths of Job Hunting.

Guest Speaker/Author: Nick Corcodilos
Date: Wednesday, February 22, 2006
Time: 4:00-5:00 PM Eastern, 1:00-2:00 PM Pacific

If success in job hunting depended on following the right steps, then every opportunity would result in a job offer. Career books and experts teach "the steps" -- they're much the same no matter who teaches them. But the truth is, a job search cannot be prescribed. Every job search is different -- that's why cookie-cutter approaches don't work. The challenge in job hunting lies in the obstacles: knowing how to deal with a few daunting problems that crop up to kill a deal.

And that is what this Ask The Headhunter dialogue is about: the "deal-killer" problems talented people face in the job hunt. We'll deal with your real, live challenges. If you can't overcome these situations, the outcome is the same -- you lose control. You're left waiting by the phone for a decision and for feedback that will never come. You're toast, because you didn't know how to deal with one or two obstacles. Some examples:

  1. When you find the perfect job listing, how can you avoid the rush of competitors?
  2. You expect to negotiate a good offer -- so what do you do when the boss insists on knowing your salary history?
  3. The job is internal and you're primed for the promotion -- but it's wired for someone else. How can you optimize the outcome, no matter what happens?
  4. You've opened the door to a good company. Now they want your resume -- how do you keep it from getting "buried" after you send it in?
  5. You got the offer -- now, how do you negotiate and optimize it?
  6. You made it in the door, but you're painfully lacking in experience. How can you get to the next round, anyway?

Nick started headhunting in Silicon Valley in 1979 and has answered over 20,000 questions from Ask The Headhunter readers since 1995. He has seen nearly every problem faced by job hunters. Job hunting boils down to one thing: being able to demonstrate that you can do the job profitably for the employer. That's the solution to almost every obstacle a talented job hunter faces. The secret is knowing how to apply it to overcome the obstacles that stop you on the path to success. And that's what you'll learn here -- just Ask The Headhunter.

Nick Corcodilos is the host of Ask the Headhunter® and author of Ask The Headhunter: Reinventing the Interview to Win the Job. Additionally, he has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Reader’s Digest, USA Today, and The New York Times. He has appeared on CNN, CNBC and MSNBC.
